History
Historical Development of the Department of Information Management
In order to cultivate information technology professionals, the university established the Department of Electronic Computing in the 59th academic year of the Republic of China (1970). The development of the department can be divided into the following stages:
-
Academic Year 1970
A five-year junior college daytime program, the Department of Electronic Computing, was established. Professional courses utilized second-generation computers (CDC-3150) for practical training. As microcomputers gradually became popular due to lower costs, small and medium-sized enterprises increasingly adopted computerization. To meet industry demand for data processing professionals, the curriculum was expanded, and in Academic Year 1982 the department was renamed the Department of Electronic Data Processing. -
Academic Year 1986
In response to rapid technological advancement and the widespread adoption of enterprise computerization, and to provide in-service education opportunities for working professionals, a two-year junior college evening program in Electronic Data Processing was established. -
Academic Year 1987
The Department of Business Information was established under the Open College of Commerce. To elevate the level of electronic data processing and integrate various information applications, the department entered the era of information management. In line with government policies promoting information development, the curriculum was revised in Academic Year 1992 to meet societal demand for mid-level information management professionals. In Academic Year 1994, the department was renamed the Department of Information Management, aligning with similar departments at technological universities and providing students with clear pathways for further education. -
Academic Year 2001
After the university was reorganized as the National Taipei College of Business and Technology, a daytime two-year technical program in Information Management was established. In cooperation with the Ministry of Labor’s pilot “Taiwan–Germany Elite Program,” which integrated employment, academic credentials, and professional certification through a dual-track learning model, the department assisted enterprises in cultivating high-quality information management professionals. A Taiwan–Germany special program was launched in Academic Year 2003, but due to limitations in classroom facilities, admissions were discontinued the following year. -
Academic Year 2004
In alignment with the university’s goal of developing into a technological university, the Graduate Institute of Business Administration established an Information Management Division and began enrolling graduate students. In the same year, a two-year evening technical program in Information Management was established under the Division of Continuing Education, while the number of junior college evening classes was reduced from three to two. -
Academic Year 2006
The department established a four-year daytime technical program and a four-year evening technical program in Information Management. In the same year, the number of five-year junior college daytime classes was reduced from two to one, and the number of two-year junior college continuing education classes was reduced from two to one. -
Academic Year 2008
Admissions to the two-year junior college continuing education program were discontinued. One additional class was admitted to the two-year evening technical program. At that time, the department comprised 5 five-year junior college daytime classes, 2 two-year daytime technical classes, 4 four-year daytime technical classes, 6 two-year evening technical classes, and 5 four-year evening technical classes, with a total student population of approximately 1,000. -
Academic Year 2009
The Graduate Institute of Information Technology and Management (an independent institute) was established, with five full-time faculty members transferred to the institute. In Academic Year 2011, admissions to the Information Management Division of the Graduate Institute of Business Administration were discontinued, and enrollment in the two-year evening technical program was reduced by one class. -

Academic Year 2019
In response to the growing importance of artificial intelligence, and to cultivate advanced professionals capable of integrating AI and business applications, the department applied to establish the Master’s Program in Artificial Intelligence and Business Applications, with an annual intake of 8 students. The program began enrollment in Academic Year 2021. -
From Academic Year 2021
With approval, the department established a four-year technical special program for outstanding technical students. From Academic Years 2021 to 2022, adjustments in continuing education enrollment led to the operation of two classes in the two-year evening technical program. In Academic Year 2023, enrollment was reduced to one class, and the Master’s Program in Artificial Intelligence and Business Applications was further strengthened to cultivate advanced information professionals in response to industry needs. -
Current Status
In response to rapid social change and environmental demands, the department has timely adjusted its academic systems and class sizes. It currently offers programs at the five-year junior college, four-year technical (daytime, special program for outstanding technical students, and continuing education), two-year technical (daytime and continuing education), and master’s levels, with a total student population of approximately 850. -
